The Contenders
Tom Buchanan is a hulking physical specimen as he dominates the heavyweight competition defending his championship title since 1919. He is a sure killer in the ring with the willingness to finish a hurt fighter. Always aggressive and walking his opponent backwards from the opening bell, he is already considered as one of the greatest rough and tumble fighter ever. A tornadic left hook, the punch first explodes from the shoulder generating body force from the hip and the bicep gives it a deadly finish. What makes Buchanan such a dangerous fighter is his ability to be a two handed hitter. When Buchanan is able to get his foot outside of his opponents, his short, straight and powerful right cross is enough to knockout his opponents. He is the heavy favorite in this matchup seemingly having an advantage in all categories on paper.
Known as one of the greatest fighters ever and a sure fan favorite, the quick-fisted, intelligent boxer is outweighed by 19 pounds and has a much shorter reach than Buchanan. Ignoring the critics that said that he should never fight above welterweight, he has had many impressive fights winning the light heavyweight title in 1913 against Dick Rice, fighting twenty rounds with Joe Jeannette when he was at the top of his form, and knocking out Bombardier Wells who was one of the cleverest boxers and fastest punchers that ever lived. Gatsby’s defensive and patient fighting style makes it difficult for any fighter to land any power punches, and his ability to counterpunch with a surprisingly strong right makes him a very dangerous fighter. Moreover, his lighter body should allow him to stay fresher than Buchanan if the fights go into the later round, giving him a puncher's chance in this highly anticipated match.
